Putting Ourselves Out "There"

Questions, Growth, and Yes

When figuring out whether doing something is worth it, two questions can put things into perspective
  1. What’s the worst that could happen? Failing at this doesn’t mean the end of the world
  2. How will I feel in 5 years if you don’t do this? Will you regret not going for it?

Grow with the flow
Ellen was not afraid to leave where she felt she wasn’t growing in the direction she wanted--and that is bold especially in our East African job market where scarcity is the name of the game. We ought to learn to be more okay with experimenting, failing, and trying again (note to self pinned). After all, it’s in that space where growth happens. But it’s arguably more bearable to try things that excite us and fail at those than fail at something we weren’t interested in in the first place (wasted time much?)

Say yes more often when you’re still figuring it out which is always because are we ever done figuring it out?
Ellen worked, saw opportunities that interested her (like selling her art while still in school and trying out toastmasters and becoming a marketer) and jumped in fully. A lot of those experiences were stepping stones for her that worked together to catapult her into her first big job. If you are still uncertain about what it is you’re keen on pursuing as a career, the best thing to do is keeping your options open by allowing yourself to try as many things as possible and allowing yourself to find what sparks your fire and what doesn't.

Keeping an open mind does sound like a smart thing to do when facing major uncertainty, perhaps especially in the pursuit of professional growth. Thank you for the insights, I enjoyed reading this and listening to Ellen.
